The Rules@Work Toolkit is a rules engine based on controlled flow of work. It enables the creation, testing, management and execution of domain specific business rules.

RW incorporates the best of what rules-based engines have to offer, allowing the creation of business-specific rule engines, under which many knowledge bases can be created. Easier maintainability and customization of the systems and business rules is achieved with minimum effort, costs and time. It is comprised of three components: the Rules@Work Composer, the Rules@Work Processor and the Rules@Work Service Administrator. All three components allow for maximum performance, flexibility and extensibility of applications that use them.

RW acts as a repository of code that handles various business situations. Its role is to accumulate business knowledge in small manageable pieces that are called business rules. Because of today's complexity of business relationships, regulations and situations, rules that decide on a certain path of action may be based on several parameters. Such parameters are different from one domain of applications to the other. RW identifies an application domain as a Rule Engine.

Engines can be created for as many applications as desired. Each engine can have multiple knowledge bases that serve diverse requirements. For example, a Rules Engine for a project-level application could have several Knowledge Bases: Data Conversion, Client Address Maintenance, Payment Processing, etc. Each of these would have their own Rules and Methods, but would share the same Inputs and State Variables.

The toolkit is used in many parts of the MedicaPlus HIS, including patient billing and laboratory alerts, and will be the point of integration with the ERP component of our solution. A set of functions is readily available for rule creation. However, external components can be configured to extend the rule syntax for the engine. The ability of the RW Toolkit to maintain multiple database connections is particularly of help when communicating with both the HIS and the ERP databases. In addition, medical professionals can utilize the toolkit for creating and running medical logic rules that will be automatically invoked at certain events within the HIS.
